After it was announced that the Pilot National 5 Roofing course is to be rolled out across Scottish Schools, Area Sales Manager, Dylan McConnell tells us how Permavent aided the roll-out.
Dylan has maintained a close working relationship with Lewis Miller, Director of Compass Roofing, for several years. After finalising the course details for the pilot roofing programmes in multiple high schools across Scotland, Lewis approached Dylan to collaborate on developing the roofing underlays module for students.
Given Dylan’s previous educational background and his reputation as a trusted technical resource, he was more than happy to assist in writing and delivering the module alongside Lewis.
The module was designed to keep students as engaged as possible, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience on the slating rigs. Slideshows, videos, and physical samples presented in the classroom were quickly translated into practical applications. Students gained an understanding of roofing underlays, the different types available in the market, and the necessity of each. Additionally, installing membranes to British Standards reinforced classroom learning in a fun and interactive way.
The enthusiasm and feedback from students were overwhelmingly positive. Dylan added, “To me, Permavent has always been at the forefront of improving the industry and providing the correct guidance. This has become more important than ever, given the shortage of skilled labour and the growing demand for roofers. Sparking interest in any trade at this level is essential—it not only helps address labour shortages but also challenges the misconception that trades are only for those who don’t attend university.”
