Requirements

The primary goal was to refurbish the existing roof covering, encompassing the slates, roof lights, gutters, and downspouts. Additionally, the installation of solar panels and bespoke windows were incorporated in the design, along with cast iron downpipes, a thermal insulation upgrade and a full safety system.

Why Permavent was chosen:

The refurbishment was required to be executed in a manner that respected and was sympathetic to the existing building and its surrounding environment.

The roof underwent a complete refurbishment, which included new roof windows and solar installation.

Where feasible, the original undamaged existing Welsh slate was reused for certain sections, whilst it was also stipulated in planning that matching new Welsh slate should be selected for other elevations.

The clients specifications were to ensure that the highest quality products were specified and which met British Standards.

How Permavent was installed:

Given the project’s complexity and large scale, the workload had to be meticulously organised, ensuring that all trades could complete their tasks within the timeframe without interfering with each other’s progress.

Permavent APEX air and vapour open permeable membrane was installed over the original timber rafters. The integrated double tape system allowed the contractors to install the membrane with ease, especially during the windy wet autumnal months and were able to reduce the amount of waste.

The contractors encountered additional challenges with pigeons nesting on site and had ecological concerns to consider due to bats that had also made their homes within the roof structure. Bat access vents were installed which allowed easy passage routes to access the nest spots in existing roofs.

Permavent APEX a class industry leading air open and vapour permeable roofing underlay is suitable for use with all types of solar panels and provides air flow across the whole of the roof as well as the diffusion of warm air through the underlay.

Permavent APEX was installed as per the manufacturer’s instructions and building standards regulations, in compliance with BS5534 & BS5250.
