Bridging the Skills Gap: Why Learning Never Stops in Roofing

At Permavent, we believe knowledge-sharing is key to the continued growth of the roofing industry. By providing CPD opportunities, we’re helping roofing professionals develop the skills, confidence and technical expertise they need to progress throughout their careers.

The roofing industry is constantly evolving, with new products, changing regulations and increasingly demanding performance standards placing greater emphasis on technical knowledge and best practice. For Permavent, supporting the industry means more than supplying quality roofing products, it also means sharing knowledge and helping to develop the skills needed for better installations.

While formal training is often associated with those entering the industry, ongoing professional development is equally important for those already working within the trade. Roofing products, installation methods, regulations and industry guidance continue to develop, meaning that keeping knowledge up to date is an important part of maintaining high standards.

With this in mind, Permavent’s Technical Manager, Graham Copson, and Area Sales Manager, Ryan Tomlin, recently delivered a CPD session at the Centre of Roofing Excellence (CoRE), following an invitation from Andy Rowland. The session was attended by advanced learners studying heritage roofing, with attendees ranging from those beginning to establish their careers through to individuals already gaining experience within the trade.

From Theory to Practice

The CPD covered two key areas: low-pitch roofing and condensation control. While understanding the theory behind these subjects is essential, the session also placed a strong emphasis on practical application.

Following the technical elements of the training, learners were able to put their knowledge into practice on roofing rigs. The hands-on session covered a range of installation details, including ventilation, support trays, butyl tape and verge trims. It was this practical element that generated some of the most discussion and interest, giving attendees the opportunity to work through installation techniques, ask questions and develop a better understanding of how technical knowledge translates into real-world applications.

The Importance of Continuous Learning

CPDs provides an opportunity for roofing professionals to build on their existing experience, develop confidence and gain insight directly from manufacturers and industry specialists. Combining technical knowledge with practical experience can also help to reduce installation errors and ensure products perform as intended.

For Permavent, sessions such as this are an important part of helping to bridge the skills gap within the roofing industry. By sharing technical expertise and providing opportunities for hands-on learning, manufacturers can play a valuable role in supporting both those entering the trade and experienced professionals looking to keep their knowledge current.

“A huge thank you to Graham Copson from Permavent for delivering an outstanding presentation. With over 40 years of experience in the roofing industry, Graham brought an incredible depth of knowledge, practical insights and clear expertise to some complex topics. Managing condensation and finding reliable low-pitch solutions are critical challenges in modern roofing construction and Graham’s technical breakdown was incredibly valuable to our learners.”
