Case Study

Permavent APEX gives a new lease of life to the grade II listed historic Roundhouse in Holbeck, Leeds.

The Roundhouse, Leeds

A historic building, designed by Thomas Grainger and built in 1847, which once housed Victorian steam locomotives, received a complete restoration and full roof refurbishment. Permavent Apex membrane was installed under the newly restored traditional slate roofing to complete the project.

Requirements

A full roof replacement, ensuring the original aesthetics of The Roundhouse and the original roof features remained the same as when it was originally completed in 1847.

Why Permavent was chosen:

Permavent Apex, an air and vapour permeable membrane, was the product of choice on this grand scale commercial project. It was installed to complete the entire full roof refurbishment.

To satisfy the aesthetic requirements, Permavent APEX was specified as a condensation control system which eliminates the need for low or high level ventilation and exceeds the requirements of BS 5534:2014+A2:2018 code of practice for slating and tiling for pitched roofs and BS 5250:2021 Management of moisture in buildings – code of practice.

The integrated double tape system allows APEX to be installed in all UK wind zones and allowing ease of use on such a large round expanse of roof. APEX also provides a secondary barrier to water ingress.

How Permavent products were installed:

Permavent Apex was installed in a standard manner over the original timber rafters. The integrated double tape system allowed the contractors to install the membrane with ease, especially during the windy wet autumnal months and installers were able to reduce the amount of waste.

Permavent APEX is both vapour and air permeable, which means no additional ventilation needed to be installed into the roof, which was an important solution to maintain the original aesthetics of the building.

Apex was installed according to Permavent’s fitting instructions, good roofing practice and compliance with BS 5534:2014+A2:2018 Code of practice for slating and tiling for pitched roofs and BS 5250:20121 Management of moisture in buildings – code of practice.

Contracted by Martin Brooks Ltd, the award-winning project transformed the historic Roundhouse into a modern sports facility. This architectural treasure has been granted a fresh lease of life.
