As part of the construction of a new boarding house at Rikkyo School, Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd specified and installed the complete Permavent Full System to deliver a durable, fully ventilated roofing solution. The specification provided long-term protection against condensation while enabling a fast, efficient installation with minimal disruption to the school's day-to-day operations. The Project

Rikkyo School in England is a co-educational Japanese primary and secondary boarding school located in Rudgwick, near Horsham, West Sussex. Established in 1972, the school is affiliated with the Anglican Church in Japan and provides education for the children of Japanese families living and working throughout the UK and Europe.

Set within a picturesque rural campus on the West Sussex and Surrey border, the school combines traditional British architecture with modern educational and residential facilities. As part of its continued investment in student accommodation, a new boarding house was constructed, requiring the complete supply and installation of a high-performance pitched roofing system that would meet current Building Regulations while delivering reliable long-term performance.

A key requirement was to ensure the roof structure remained well-ventilated to minimise the risk of condensation and moisture build-up throughout the life of the building.

Permavent in Action

To achieve these requirements, Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd specified the Permavent Full System, incorporating Permavent NB145, high-performance roofing underlay, Universal Dry Ridge Kit, Over Fascia Vent and Eaves Support Tray. For this particular roof design, NB145 was specifically selected because counter-battening could not be accommodated beneath the fibre cement covering, with the fully ventilated system providing continuous airflow from eaves to ridge.

Working together as a complete roofing system, these products provide continuous airflow from the eaves to the ridge, helping to reduce the risk of harmful condensation within the roof space. The dry-fix ridge system also creates a mechanically fixed, low-maintenance solution that offers enhanced durability and long-term weather resistance.

As the school remained fully operational throughout the construction works, it was essential that the roofing installation could be completed efficiently and without unnecessary disruption. The Permavent system proved straightforward to install, allowing the roofing works to progress smoothly with no technical complications or installation issues.

Following completion, the project qualified for Permavent’s 20 Year Ventilation Guarantee, giving both the contractor and client additional confidence in the long-term performance of the roofing system.
