Permavent APEX Delivers Full Reroofing Solution to Safeguard Grade II-Listed Castle Street Chambers and Earl De Grey Pub

Castle Street Chambers: A Landmark Restored

The Grade II-listed Castle Street Chambers, a striking example of Renaissance Revival architecture designed by B.S. Jacobs and constructed in 1900 for Hull steamship owners and brokers Messrs G R Sanderson, has long been a distinctive feature of the cityscape with its curved frontage. Originally built for Hull’s thriving maritime industry, the building stood vacant and derelict since the 1970s, supported by protective scaffolding for over 20 years. Adjacent to it, the historic Earl de Grey pub, dating back to the 1840s and once a favourite haunt for seafarers and sailors from around the world, was also included in the ambitious £2 million restoration project after falling into dereliction for over two decades. In 2020, the pub’s Grade II-listed, iconic faience frontage was carefully dismantled brick by brick and placed into storage, and now, following the completion of the restoration, those original bricks have returned to proudly restore the Earl de Grey’s façade, forming a key part of the revitalised site.

Requirements

A full reroofing of Castle Street Chambers and the Earl De Grey Pub was essential due to the building’s prolonged exposure to the elements after decades of vacancy. The historic structure had suffered significant deterioration, and temporary scaffolding could no longer prevent water ingress or internal damage. To protect the integrity of the Grade II-listed building, ensure long-term weatherproofing and insulation, and meet modern building standards while respecting its heritage status, the restoration team opted for a complete reroofing solution.

Why Permavent was chosen

Permavent APEX air open and vapour permeable membrane was specified for the reroofing of the Castle Street Chambers buildings and the Earl de Grey Pub due to its exceptional suitability for heritage restorations. As a high-performance, breathable roofing membrane, APEX offers superior moisture control, effectively preventing condensation and damp, critical factors in preserving the integrity of historic structures. Its outstanding durability and compatibility with traditional roofing materials make it ideal for maintaining the architectural character of listed buildings while preparing them for modern commercial use. By selecting Permavent APEX, the restoration team ensured that Castle Street Chambers and the Earl de Grey are not only structurally sound and weatherproof, but also fully equipped to meet contemporary standards, all while safeguarding their historic heritage.

How Permavent was installed

To restore the roof of the Grade II-listed Castle Street Chambers buildings, the team carried out a full reroofing using Permavent APEX, a high-performance, breathable membrane designed specifically for heritage and commercial applications. The installation followed the BS 5534 Code of Practice and adhered to best practices for both cold and warm roof configurations. Contractor, LA Hall,  explained Permavent APEX was straightforward to install, which was a significant advantage given the complexity of working on a historic structure. The membrane’s flexibility and compatibility with traditional roofing materials allowed for a smooth installation process, reducing time on site and ensuring a secure, weatherproof finish.

This ease of use, combined with Permavent APEX’s superior moisture control and durability, made it an ideal choice for preserving the building’s architectural integrity while preparing it for modern commercial use. Now fully restored as part of a £2 million office development, the site seamlessly blends heritage with modern functionality, incorporating the reconstructed frontage of the historic Earl de Grey pub and delivering over 6,000 sq ft (557 sqm) of high-quality commercial space adjacent to Hull’s vibrant marina. After decades of neglect, Castle Street Chambers and the Earl de Grey pub are once again active contributors to the city’s architectural and economic landscape.

“Working on the Castle Street Chambers restoration was a privilege, and choosing Permavent APEX for the reroofing was an easy decision. Its breathable membrane offered the perfect balance of durability and heritage compatibility, allowing us to protect the building from moisture and damp without compromising its architectural integrity. The installation was efficient, and the product’s performance has exceeded expectations. Thanks to Permavent APEX, Castle Street Chambers is now structurally sound, weatherproof, and ready for modern commercial use — all while preserving its historic charm.”
