NEW !!!
Not all breather membranes are the
same!
Breather membranes are designed to combat condensation in the
roof-space and should do just that.
New air
testing rules require the elimination of drafts completely. A cold non-vented
roof space using breather membranes can be up to 25% more energy
efficient than the traditional vented roof space. This means that a cold
non-vented roof is now an important design element. Forthcoming regulations will
also insist that the thermal bridge, which occurs over the wall plate
at eaves level, is addressed and this is best achieved again using the cold
non-vented system.
Independent research from the
Caledonian
University
has indicated the importance of
using the right breather membrane and recommends a vapour resistance of below
0.16 MNs/g-1.
Current
building regulations require that all breather membranes should be independently
tested for the specific purpose that they are used for. The industry prefers the
BBA certification method but not all breathers have the cold non-vented
certificate.
When choosing a
breather membrane you must ensure it has the correct
certificate!
Permavent™ currently holds 6 BBA
certificates and 3 IAB certificates for our
complete rage covering all aspects of roofing underlays.
To help
you decide which breather to insist on we are publishing our comparison
chart which reproduces information taken
from the BBA web site (www.bbacerts.co.uk) showing the
results of their tests, across various membranes.
NOTE!
To help reduce costs many of the cheaper breathers do not
use sufficient U.V stabiliser!
If your breather fails to meet the new regulations, are you really saving money
if you are later forced to re-roof?
